WaterSaver Lane Showcases Beauty of Low-Water-Use Landscapes

Cottage Garden
Next time you visit the San Antonio Botanical Garden, be sure to go by WaterSaver Lane, the new lawn and environmental exhibit sponsored in part by SAWS.

WaterSaver Lane was created to celebrate the work of the EPA-sponsored Lawns and Environment Committee, which produced new guidelines for an environmentally-responsible natural landscape. The exhibit also shows the versatility of a low-water-use landscape in San Antonio.

The exhibit includes six different low-water-use landscapes. Each is centered on a theme that complements the planting. Whether your taste runs to Cottage Garden, Spanish Courtyard, Wildscape, Manicured Xeriscape, or Hill Country, there is a landscape for you to enjoy. You can also compare your favorite themed low-water-use example to a regular St. Augustine-dominated landscape.

All the plants are identified in the display and other signage. Handouts provide additional information on how to model your own low-water-use landscape after the exhibits.

Spanish Courtyard
Partners on the project include San Antonio Parks and Recreation, the San Antonio Botanical Society, Texas Turfgrowers Producers, Garden-Ville, Garden Volunteers of South Texas and several area nurseries.

The San Antonio Botanical Garden is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Admission is $7 for adults; $4 for children ages 3 to 13; $5 for Seniors ages 65 and up; and $5 for active military and students with ID.

The San Antonio Botanical Garden is highly suitable for use by people of all ages and abilities and is wheelchair accessible.
