s a water utility for the seventh largest city in America, San Antonio Water System has taken the lead in water conservation. It only makes sense to extend our responsibility to the environment and endorse energy management and conservation efforts that seek to reduce costs for our ratepayers and protect our natural resources.

Just like any industry out there, SAWS’ goal is to reduce energy consumption and spend as little as possible doing it. One solution is by using high-efficiency pumps and motors to distribute water to our customers and collect wastewater for reuse through our recycled water program.

SAWS also has put considerable effort into a renewable energy project (biogas) at the Dos Rios Water Recycling Center. SAWS will be the first major utility in the nation to sell biogas generated while treating the city’s sewage. Biogas is a natural and renewable source of energy.

For many years SAWS has successfully supported efforts to reduce energy usage. Some of the measures taken by SAWS to manage energy include the use of T8 high-efficiency fluorescent lamps electronically ballasted for lighting and utilizing computer sleep mode software.
