SAWS Celebrates National Senior Citizens Day by Simplifying Affordability Program

San Antonio Water System is celebrating National Senior Citizens Day by announcing that customers 60 years and older will now be automatically enrolled in SAWS Senior Citizen Billing Program.

The program, which is one of six SAWS Affordability Programs, provides an exemption for seniors from 5 percent late fees.

In the past, customers were required to apply for the senior exemption. Now, SAWS is partnering with City Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales, and City Councilman Rey Saldaña, SAWS will automatically enroll customers that qualify.

“It’s important to identify any programs that our seniors could benefit from,” Gonzales said. “I’m proud to have worked with SAWS to make this benefit more accessible to customers that could use a little extra help.”

Saldaña agreed that auto-enrollment makes great sense for seniors.

“I’m sure the program will come as a huge relief to the many seniors in my district, as well as throughout the City who will benefit from it,” he said. “It gives them a little more payment flexibility, which is especially helpful for those on a fixed monthly income.”

Now, eligible customers will receive a notice from SAWS around the time of their 60th birthday alerting them that they are enrolled in the program. Those who are already of age will also be automatically enrolled.
