Community Investment

SAWS invests both time and money in the San Antonio community. We recently expanded our Affordability programs to assist residential customers who need a little help paying their bills. We also bring our resources to areas where the most need exists by holding enrollment fairs. Our outreach also extends into the classrooms. We invest in future generations through our national award-winning Education Department to create water-literate citizens who understand the significance of this natural resource to our area.

  • More than 19,000 SAWS customers are currently enrolled in our Affordability Discount Program. This program offers direct financial assistance on a customer’s monthly bill up to $18 a month. With the average bill for this community segment being $40-$50 a month, this is of significant help.
  • We have seven Affordability programs, ranging from payment assistance, fee waivers, and courtesy programs. Total 2016 assistance is estimated to total more than $3 million.
  • Project Agua is another direct payment assistance program that provides up to $115 per customer twice a year if they meet certain income requirements and are in danger of disconnection. This is in addition to enrollment in the Affordability Discount program. SAWS employees contribute half of the donated funds to this program.
  • Our largest program, the Senior Billing Discount, waives late fees for those over age 60. Currently, over 28,500 seniors are enrolled.
  • Since 2002, SAWS, our employees and customers have provided more than $18 million in assistance to "keep the water on" for those residential customers struggling to pay their water bill.
  • Our Education Department has curriculum and programs that cover everyone from elementary school students to adults. Annually, 15,000 San Antonians participate in our Education programs.
  • Impact is a national award-winning high school program that promotes science, water education and civic responsibility through service-based learning and provides meaningful community service with academic study.
