Pat Merritt

Merritt is a retired educator, having spent nearly four decades in the education profession.

She joined the SAWS Board of Trustees in 2013, and serves as Chairman of the Audit Committee.

Merritt attends Saint James AME Church in Prospect Hill where she finds herself in a familiar teaching role as superintendent of Sunday school. She serves on the San Antonio Boys & Girls Club Advisory Board at its East Side location and formerly served as a Girl Scout troop leader.

Merritt was born in Austin but received her education in San Antonio: St. Catherine Catholic School on Leal Street from kindergarten until second grade; then John B. Hood Elementary; Riley Junior High and Wheatley High School.

She received her bachelor's degree from Tennessee State in Nashville and returned to Texas to obtain her master's in administration and supervision from Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville).

Merritt then taught in Gary, Indiana and Baltimore, Maryland for a total of 10 years. She returned to San Antonio and spent 18 years as a teacher and 10 years as a math and science curriculum coordinator in the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD).

Merritt is a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Alliance of Black School Educators and Who's Who Among American Teachers. She has a daughter, grandchild and son-in-law.
