In 2024, SAWS updated several drought rules. The changes included a new process for water waste violations. Previously, water waste citations went through a municipal court process. Now, the enforcement process is conducted by SAWS, eliminating the need to appear in court. Customers who disagree have an opportunity to appeal through a committee of non-SAWS employees. This change ensures that all customers, regardless of their service location, are subject to the same rules.

SAWS established the Dispute Resolution Committee to provide an independent third-party review of escalated water waste violations. If you are interested in serving and have questions about the DRC, contact the staff liaison at wateringviolation@saws.org.
